Israel: Delving into the Depths of Indian Devotion

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...
Both Israel and India in the recent years have collaborated on many topics and there is a presence of strong support among Indians especially Hindus for Israel on various matters.

In the today’s world of wars, it is not difficult to observe the countries having different perspective about others. Not only in the ongoing war involving Israel but also in the earlier conflicts it has been seen that Indians especially Hindus supporting Israel and opposing the other side.

India got independence in 1947 whereas the Israel was created the next year, 1948. It was in 1950 that India announced its official recognition of Isreal. However, it was in 1992 that embassies were opened with full diplomatic relations.

Narendra Modi, the current prime minister of India was the first Indian pm to visit Isreal (2017). Also he was the first Indian pm to visit Palestine ( 2018).

Why so much of support from Hindus?

History tells us that both Jews and Hindus have went through genocide and decimation in the past. Like it was the Holocaust for Jews where Nazis and its collaborators systematically killed many, for Hindus it was foreign invasions and invaders and especially the Islamic ones.

From destroying there temples and plundering loot to killing on mass scale, taking female members away to causing mass destruction, Islamic invaders always remained a topic to be remembered and rejected by Hindus.

When India got independence in 1947, it came along with the partition of the country into three parts on the grounds of religion – India, East Pakistan(now Bangladesh) and West Pakistan(now Pakistan) and led to death of people in large numbers.

Many of them considered it as unjustified as someone outsider, who came as invader took away a large part of their territory as a separate nation. And also the ones who remained in the independent India with them, too got many rights under the newly framed Constitution.

Question among them was like : How can a foreign sect that came as invader and caused harm to them over many years demand for a territory that don’t even belong to them historically?

These perspectives and question over the time went into depth to the minds of Hindus and perhaps is a major reason behind them supporting a country that is opposing or is against Islamic state or terrorism as per the situation it may be.

Government

Both Israel and India have collaborated in many fields like defence, science and technology, agriculture, economic amd commercial etc.

Trade between India and Israel has increased from USD 5 billion before the Covid-19 pandemic to about USD 7.5 billion till 2023 January. Trade in diamonds constitutes about 50% of bilateral trade. India is Israel’s third-largest trade partner in Asia and seventh largest globally.

People

  • Hastags like #IndiaIsraelFriendship, #StandWithIsrael, #IndiaStandsWithIsrael are quite common to be seen. From defense cooperation to cultural exchanges, #StrongerTogether underscores shared pursuits.
  • #IsraelIndiaAlliance, #FriendshipBeyondBorders exemplifies the support Indians give to Israel on social media.

Are Jews and Hindu’s religious perspectives genuine to be matched ?

For Jews, God is an absolute one, indivisible and incomparable being who is the ultimate cause of all existence whereas in Hinduism, gods are considered to have a similar status to another when distinct, but is to be seen as “aspects or manifestations of a single, transcendent god”, or an “impersonal absolute”.

Both Jews and Muslims consider Pork as forbidden but they consume Beef. The first one is just a normal animal in Hinduism. But the cow is considered very sacred and pious among them. There seems a very high chance that majority of them are unknown of this fact.

At the same time, they probably are also unaware of the fact that Israel supports Azerbaijan, a Muslim major country while India supports Armenia, a Christian major country. And both the countries are rivals of each other.

Supporting or opposing anyone depends on the perspectives of the person. It is upto us whom we do support and based on what. However, we should respect each other’s believes as each one has its on point of view and uniqueness.
